Question about Hitchhikers

From: (mindizney@aol.com) | Date: 2002-07-23 21:29:25 UTC-04:00
I have a quick question about hitchhiker boxes.  According to the LbNA website, hitchhikers are not boxes in and of themself, but just a logbook and stamp moved from one box to another.  In my travels, some of the letterboxes are quite small and can just barely hold one logbook and stamp let alone two.  Would it be tacky to have our hitchhiker in a box?

Just wondering.....  always wanted to plant some hitchhikers....

We put ours in their own boxes, they stay protected and no need to
worry about them fitting in another box. You might want to write on
the outside of the box that it's a HH to avoid confusion. The one
and only HH we found was in a box as well and it was in really good
shape.

I have never made a hitchhiker but have found several and a couple of them were in their own boxes and were placed in the same spot as the host box. I think this is actually a better idea because you are correct that some boxes are too small. Trying to fit a hh in a box that is too small could get both the hh and host box ruined if it doesn't shut well. Do mark the box clearly as a hitchhiker. It has been done before by others and does seem to work well. Have fun. ...Chuck & Molly P36F134X19 Mansfield CT

Greetings,

We've only found one hitchhiker so far, and it was in it's own box. The only problem I potentially could see with this approach is that some hiding places may not be large enough to accomadate two boxes, which means you might need to hang onto a HH for a little while. But the same problem exists if you've got a HH without a box, and the next one you find is too small to fit it.

I think it is simply a matter of personal taste.
